About the Traffic Section
The Traffic Section’s primary responsibility is the investigation of traffic crashes and enforcement of traffic laws. Officers assigned to the section are skilled traffic accident investigators who have received training in accident investigation and traffic law enforcement. Several officers also have received training as traffic accident reconstructionists.
The section is supervised by a Sergeant who has a high degree of traffic investigation and enforcement experience. The section is staffed by officers who are tasked with the investigation of hit-skip accidents and conducting in-depth investigation of serious injury and fatal accidents. Each patrol shift has three police officers who conduct traffic accident investigations and enforcement activities for each of the three patrol shifts.
For several years, the Hamilton Police Department has received grants from the State of Ohio to fund officers for traffic enforcement details to address concerns of speed-related traffic crashes, traffic safety violations--such as seat belt, child safety seat and unsafe vehicle operation--Driving Under Suspension/Revocation, and Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs. The officers assigned to these duties, in addition to officers working patrol shift duties, allow the Hamilton Police Department to administer a focused traffic enforcement program to provide for the safety of those who live, work, and play in Hamilton.
