Power outages can happen at any time. Despite regular system maintenance and improvements, the City’s electric system can be impacted by Mother Nature and human activity. And yet, evident by its Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3®) Platinum Designation, the Electric Department prides itself on maintaining safe and reliable service and responding quickly when service interruptions do occur. 

Across the entire United States, the top three leading causes of power outages are:
  • 70% weather-related events, like heavy wind, lightening strikes, and ice storms 
  • 11% animals, such as squirrels and birds, contacting power lines  
  • 4% automobile and other vehicle accidents
